Students working on Eagle Scout project of creating a backboard for tennis to use for practice

Bethel-Tate High School is celebrating the outstanding community service and dedication of two Eagle Scouts, brothers Layne and Luke Pelvit, whose recent projects have made a lasting impact on the school’s tennis program. Head Boys Tennis Coach Lori Lenhart said that the Pelvit brothers planned, designed, and executed improvements that will benefit current and future players for years to come.

For his Eagle Scout project, Layne Pelvit engineered and installed a new tennis hitting backboard, giving players an essential tool for skill development and independent practice. The sturdy backboard allows athletes to improve consistency, form, and accuracy even when training partners aren’t available.

Luke Pelvit’s project focused on enhancing courtside comfort and functionality. He led the construction of four durable benches designed for use on the tennis courts. The benches, which are currently being stored safely until spring, will provide much-needed seating for athletes during matches and practice sessions.

In carrying out their projects, Layne and Luke enlisted the help of more than 20 volunteers who assisted with the construction and installation work. As required of all Eagle Scout candidates, the brothers were responsible for the full planning and leadership of their projects including managing design, securing materials, organizing volunteers, and directing all work on build day while the volunteers executed the physical building under their guidance.

Coach Lenhart praised Layne and Luke for their initiative, leadership, and ongoing commitment to the tennis community.

“Layne and Luke have been instrumental in supporting our team since we reinstated the program a few years ago,” she said. “They continue to volunteer in countless ways, and their Eagle Scout projects demonstrate their incredible generosity and dedication. We are massively thankful for their hard work.”

Their efforts reflect the spirit of service that defines Bethel-Tate athletics, a sentiment echoed by Athletic Director Evan Shepherd.

"Layne and Luke consistently represent our athletic program with class, leadership, and BT pride," he said. "Their Eagle Scout projects are yet another example of their commitment to serving and leading others. We are grateful for their dedication to our tennis program and the Bethel-Tate community."
