Students who are gifted present unique needs, as they may differ from their age-level peers in abilities, talents, interests, and/or maturity. The Bethel-Tate Local School District strives to provide an environment where these students can thrive, providing accelerated and enriched instruction that is grounded in research-based practices.
The Bethel -Tate Local School District screens and identifies students who perform or show potential for performing at high levels of accomplishment in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and/or visual and/or performing arts. The district adheres to the Ohio Revised Code for this process and utilizes assessments approved by the Ohio Department of Education.
Several approved methods are used for identifying students who are gifted, which include:
• Whole grade level pre-screening with STAR in grades K -5 and screening with the Iowa Assessments in grade 2 and the Stanford Achievement Test in grade 6
• Whole grade level screening with the Cognitive Abilities Test in grades 2 and 4
• Individually administered assessments, including competency checklists. In addition, candidates in grades K -12 may be referred for further testing by teachers, parents, students, and community members. The district provides at least two opportunities per year for assessment upon referral (September and January), and forms for this purpose are available by request from the school office.
