A real concern expressed by staff has been the interruption of instruction due to snow day cancellations and two hour delays. As a result and because we have to schedule a make-up day anyway, I have recommended and the board has approved the use of Friday, March 21 as a calamity make-up day. The interruption of instruction can be especially damaging for students preparing for the various high stakes state tests. Therefore, we have some catching up to do. Please note this change to make sure we have our usual excellent attendance. Any further weather related cancellations will result in the school year being extended.
One of our goals has been to make the senior year a meaningful year of preparation for college. As a result, three years ago, we began requiring students to prepare and present senior projects. The presentation of those projects is actually the culmination of two years of work. Students begin work on their topics when take their research class as juniors. Actual project work often begins the summer prior to their senior year with presentation before judges in February and May. In the process, students learn organizational and presentation skills many of which are cross curricular.
Students typically pick project topics in line with interests and ambitions. The range of topics is amazing! We’ve had students who constructed a hovercraft and a rocket, they’ve painted trucks, choreographed dance routines, composed music, constructed dog habitats, etc. Topics must be approved by Mrs. Isaacs, Senior Project Coordinator. Judges are faculty and volunteers from the community. Congratulations to our seniors who have presented this week. Our next group presents in May.
Finally, I’ve come across some very interesting data concerning the amount we spend per pupil and their academic attainment. At $7237/year/per student, Bethel-Tate schools has the 12th lowest per pupil figure in the state. We along with two other low spending districts are excellent rated. Therefore, we are the highest rated/lowest per pupil spending district in the state of
